Lynn Walls cites experience, leadership,
and honesty in bid for Revenue Commissioner
Lynn Walls is confident that her 22 years experience in dealing with all aspects of the revenue department makes her the most qualified candidate to serve as Revenue Commissioner of Marshall County.
Walls, the Chief Revenue Clerk for the county, is basing her campaign on her proven ability to offer citizens honest, experienced leadership.
"Your revenue commissioner's office is intended to be a place where you can come to get answers about your tax issues as well as be assured that you are getting all the exemptions that you are eligible for and entitled to under state law," stated Walls, 44 of Arab.
"I have worked directly with the citizens for more than two decades and have demonstrated my concern and willingness to help with people's problems. I believe it is important to be knowledgable and available to the taxpayers. I promise to continue to serve the public as I have in the past and to be available when you need help. I intend to be an elected official that you can count on."
![]() Walls has outlined a comprehensive plan to modernize the office and make it more accessible to the citizens. The plan includes creating an online payment system for taxpayers, establishing satellite payment stations in Albertville and Arab, as well as installing an after-hours drop payment system. She also promises to establish accountability for all public funds.
She is the Democratic nominee for the position and will face her Republican opponent in the November general election. She has taken a required by law leave of absence during her campaign.
Married to Marshall County Sheriff Scott Walls, she feels it's important to stress to the citizens that there is absolutely no conflict of interest in both serving as elected officials.
"Scott's business is law enforcement, and my expertise is tax law and calculations. There have been circumstances, even recently, where close family members have held public office at the same time without any conflict."
Walls is the former Lynn McCaffery and attended Albertville High School. They have two sons, Joseph and Josh, and a daughter, Natalie Smith. Joseph owns a landscaping and construction business while his wife Denille works as a registered medical assistant for an optometrist. Josh is a student at Motlow State University. Natalie is also a student and attends Athens State University. Natalie and her husband Casy Smith, a teacher at Marshall Technical School, are parents to the Walls' first grandchild, Landen.
"I am looking forward to getting out and campaigning for this important office. I hope to see as many citizens as possible in the coming months so that voters will appreciate the differences between my opponent and me", Walls concluded. "I understand how important this position to our citizens and know that they deserve a revenue commissioner who they can be proud to vote for in November.
Those interested in contacting Walls may call 256-302-2028 or 256-586-5327. Her campaign website will soon be available at www.lynnwalls.com.

Allen Childress to bring new ideas
and energy to County School Board
As a parent who is active in his children's schools, Allen Childress is concerned about offering diverse education options to keep all students in school. He believes "a brighter student is a brighter Marshall County". As a farmer and small business owner, Childress understands that it's important to operate our county schools on budget. He says that he will work with elected officials to obtrain the necessary funding to support a better quality education for all students of Marshall County.
Childress, 45, of Asbury, is the Democratic nominee for Marshall County Board of Education Place 5. Unopposed, he will not appear on the ballot until the November 2008 general election.
"I am committed to working with the superintendent and all department heads so that the chain of command works to ultimately provide the best education for all Marshall County students, teachers and staff", stated Childress.
Childress would be the youngest member on the county school board and believes he can provide new energy to the organization. "I will do whatever it takes in time and travel to help bring new ideas in education so that all the students in the county will be afforded the best education."
![]() Childress is a cattle and poultry farmer. He is also the former co-owner of the Sand Mountain Stockyard in Kilpatrick. Married to Patty Childress for 24 years, they have two sons. Justin, 21, attends the University of Alabama Huntsville. Colin, 17, is finishing his junior year at Asbury High School where Childress has served as president, vice president, and treasurer of the all-sports booster club.
Childress is a member of the Marshall County Poultry and Egg Association, the Alabama Poultry and Egg Association, the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, and the National Cattlemen Association. He serves as a deacon at Mount High Church in Asbury.
His grandfather Jim Childress served on the school board for 24 years, from 1944 to 1968. He retired from the position in 1968, 40 years ago this December.
"Allen and the entire Childress family have been very active in Marshall County. Our party has long admired their involvement in their community. We fully support his candidacy and feel confident that the voters will embrace his commitment to education excellence", said Susany McKenney, Chairwoman of the Marshall County Democratic Executive Committee. "Notice that the word 'child' is first in his name. Your child and grandchildren will be first in his mind when he serves on the Marshall County Board of Education."

Vivian Davis Figures campaigning to be
Alabama's first woman elected to U.S. Senate
Alabama has never elected a woman to the U.S. House or Senate. Now is the time, and Vivian Davis Figures is the right candidate to take on two-term incumbent Sen. Jeff Sessions, one of President George Bush's most reliable supporters. Sessions has backed Bush on everything from tax cuts, to the Iraq war, to Bush's "surge" strategy in Iraq.
Figures has received the endorsement of The Birmingham News in an editorial on Sunday, May 25, 2006. Here's the full endorsement:

EDITORIAL
Alabama's primaries
U.S. SENATE
The Democratic Party tried for a while to recruit a high-profile candidate to take on Republican incumbent Sen. Jeff Sessions. U. S. Rep. Artur Davis, D-Birmingham, and Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks are among those who gave it some thought, but thought better of it.
The Democrats ended up with a candidate who may not be as well-known, but state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures of Mobile should make the party happy. Two other Democrats, Johnny Swanson III, who ran in 2004 against U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, and Mark "No NCAA" Townsend (formelry "Rodeo Clown" in his 2002 run for governor), also are on the ballot.
Figures has extensive experience in government; she served on the Mobile City Council for three years and is in her third term in the Alabama Senate. While being a member of the state Senate is hardly a badge of honor these days after two straight do-next-to-nothing sessions filled with partisan squabbling, Figures has a reputation for working both sides of the aisle to get things done. She is probably best known for her support of an indoor-smoking ban for Alabama.
As of last week, Figures was still working on detailed positions on some issues, but has taken reliably Democratic stances on several ,such as pulling troops from Iraq and creating a universal health care system.
Vivian Davis Figures easily is the best of the three Democrats.
